In 1990, Turkey blocked the flow of the Euphrates River to fill the Ataturk Dam, creating a large man-made lake.
Technology is already in place to stop the Euphrates River, and some believe this could play a role in fulfilling the prophecy from the book of Revelation. This might make the end of the world, as described in the Bible, a very real and frightening possibility Pontus in the New Testament.
Before these terrible events happen, many Christians believe that they will be “taken to heaven” by Christ. This event is known as the Rapture, where Christians are taken away to escape the bad things that will happen on Earth.

The Black Sea Region of Turkey Pontus
Pontus is the historical name for the northeastern part of Turkey along the Black Sea.
The coast of Pontus is steep and rocky, with many rivers and forests flowing down the mountain slopes. Some of the larger rivers in this area flow through wide valleys. Access to the interior of the region is limited because mountain ranges create a natural barrier between the coast and the inside of the country.
The Kaçkar Mountains in the east rise very high, with peaks reaching 3,000 to 4,000 meters. The area is fertile, meaning it is good for farming, and it is known for producing cherries. In fact, cherries are believed to have been brought from Pontus to Europe in 72 BC.
The original people of this region were called the Leucosyri.
